Kailali District has with high prevalence of disability and functional limitations in Children which prohibits them in learning, development and participation in other school activities and activities of daily life. These children need adapted learning environment for their development and growth.
'Comparison of the Washington Group/ UNICEF Model on Child Functioning with Medical Screening for identifying Children with Functional Limitations in Kailali District, Nepal was carried out in August 2022 with joint collaboration of Anusandhan Sikshya Ra Bikas Nepal and Handicap International. Conducted in the school children of age 2-17 years from 30 schools of Dhangadi Sub-metropolitan City, Godawari Municipality and Gauriganga Municipality, the research aimed to compare two techniques i.e. medical screening and Washington Group/UNICEF module on child Functioning in the identification of children with functional limitations in three domains- Vision, hearing and physical mobility in Nepalese Context.
Washington Group/UNICEF module on child Functioning (CFM), a set of questionnaires was filled by the trained school teachers while medical screening was conducted by ENT doctor, Ophthalmologists and Physiotherapists. The compared results demonstrated that the CFM tool has a capacity to identify children with functional Limitations with 70% accuracy. The tool can be adopted in Nepal to screen disability among school children and take early precautions.
